Flagship initiatives
Learning and excellence
The Institute, the World Academy, the Africa programme and industry leadership: the Strategic Plan’s flagship priorities.
Strategic Priority 1 · Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 11
WFEO Institute
A flagship mechanism for informed decision-making, stronger education and greater capacity for sustainable development. Building on the WFEO Academy, it will offer learning and advisory services developed with UNESCO, UNU, international organisations, universities and WFEO members, including internationally recognised certification and training. In 2026–2027 the work is governance, core curricula, partnerships and financing.
Institute Committee chair: Marlene Kanga. Today’s learning platform, wfeoacademy.com, is being rebranded as the Institute; its courses include free anti-corruption modules, with registration through a member organisation.
Strategic Priority 2 · Outcomes 1, 2, 6, 11
World Academy of Engineering
WFEO’s premier platform for recognising excellence: a selective community of distinguished engineers whose experience can be deployed for complex projects, policy processes and institutional reforms, particularly in developing countries. Its launch was announced on World Engineering Day, 4 March 2026.
- Recognise excellence and leadership in engineering for sustainable development
- Advise governments, development partners, industry and international organisations, on request
- Support the Institute with mentoring, peer learning and knowledge exchange
- Champion ethics, diversity and intergenerational dialogue
Chair: José Vieira.
Fellows on the map
Once fellows are elected, the Academy’s directory could use the same map as the members: fellows by region and by area of expertise, so a government or development partner can see who could help, and where. Nothing about fellows is published yet.
Strategic Priority 5 · Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 8
Engineering Capacity Building for Africa Programme
Endorsed as a programme of the UN International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development. The Plan scales up its continuing professional development training to more African countries and new disciplines, including the use of AI, integrates its courses into the Institute, and creates “WFEO Hackathon – ECBAP Editions”. Task Force chair: GONG Ke.
Strategic Priority 8 · Outcomes 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 11
Industry leadership
A high-level advisory platform of six to ten C-suite executives, nominated by WFEO members, giving forward-looking guidance on global trends and the needs of the profession, meeting at least once a year, preferably alongside the Executive Council.
The Plan calls it the WFEO Industry Leaders Council; WFEO’s new site structure calls it the Industry Leadership Panel. One name would be agreed in discovery.
